Domus Academy Joins Global Sustainability Dialogue in Dubai

Our esteemed faculty members, Prof. Elisa Chiodo and Prof. Stefano Cardini, have presented their groundbreaking research paper, Designing for Impact: Communication for Environmental Action, at the International Conference on Sustainable Creative Art: Inspiration from Nature (SCIN). The event was held in Dubai from April 22 to 24, 2025, with the opening ceremony hosted at the iconic Museum of the Future.

Organized by IEREK, SCIN brought together thought leaders, scholars, and creatives from around the globe to explore the role of nature-inspired art and design in fostering sustainability.

Professors Chiodo and Cardini’s paper centers on Domus Academy’s innovative pedagogical approach to teaching responsibility and sustainability within the design disciplines. Drawing from their experience guiding postgraduate students in branding and communication design, the professors introduced a unique methodology—the Three-and-a-Half Diamond model—which extends the classic Double Diamond design framework. Their model introduces the initial “Doubt” phase, encouraging deep self-reflection and ethical inquiry before students begin the design process.

Their work highlights how design education can shape socially responsible professionals, capable of integrating environmental awareness and ethical decision-making into impactful real-world projects. The presentation also featured the student-led project Flocal, a communication and branding initiative developed within Domus Academy that combines social entrepreneurship, sustainability, and local community engagement.

Elisa Chiodo is the programme leader of the Master in Viusual Brand Design, Master in Business Design and the newly launched 2-Year Master of Arts in Design Leadership & Strategy. Stefano Cardini is the Programme Leader of the 2-Year Master of Arts in Design Innovation. Their contribution help to highlight Domus Academy’s ongoing engagement with academic innovation in sustainable design, reflecting its dedication to nurturing the designers of the future.
