Developed during the Advanced Design and Processes workshop in collaboration with Desiree, Komorebi is an outdoor seating system designed by Master in Product Design and Visual Brand Design students Taylor Kulczycki, Melisa Ozkok, Berra Bayraktar and Yu Chiao Wang. The project transforms sunlight into a dynamic, sensory element of outdoor living.
Inspired by the Japanese concepts of komorebi—sunlight filtering through tree leaves—and shinrin-yoku, the restorative practice of forest bathing, the project brings the calming atmosphere of nature into contemporary hospitality spaces. Through light, materials and movement, Komorebi creates a peaceful retreat that encourages slowness, well-being and reconnection with the natural environment.

Komorebi features a cushioned seat on a 360-degree swivel metal base, allowing users to adjust their position in relation to the sun. Its distinctive dual-layer canopy combines a curved, leaf-inspired structure with light-diffusing, water-resistant fabric and woven natural hemp rope.
Together, these elements recreate the shifting patterns of sunlight beneath trees. Designed for durability and comfort, the structure uses weather-resistant powder-coated metal, sustainable hemp rope and removable cushions upholstered in solution-dyed acrylic fabric, resistant to moisture, UV rays and fading. The combination balances outdoor performance with a refined, tactile aesthetic.
Value & Vision
More than a seating system, Komorebi offers an immersive experience of light, comfort and tranquillity, bringing a sense of privacy and restoration to outdoor spaces. With the potential to evolve into a broader collection of forms, colours and sizes, the project explores how contemporary design can strengthen the connection between nature and well-being.
