Peter Shire: The Memphis Group and Beyond!!!
On Tuesday, October 9, Domus Academy will host the ceramist and designer Peter Shire, one of the leading exponents of the Memphis group. Born in Los Angeles, where he currently lives and works, Shire has created ceramics, furniture, toys, interior designs, and public sculptures that seem to at once reference and parody influences such as Bauhaus, Futurism, Art Nouveau, and Art Deco. This subversive humor and playfulness extend throughout his work and made Shire a natural fit for the controversial and iconic Milan-based Memphis design group, of which he was a founding member.
During the lecture “The Memphis Group and Beyond!!!” Peter Shire, together with the journalist Caterina Lunghi and Domus Academy’s Design cluster head Emmanuel Calderon, will look at the history and progression of Shire’s work. Shire will talk about his personal history, his creative methods, and his artistic career—in particular, the years he worked with Alessandro Mendini, Andrea Branzi, Michael Graves, Hans Hollein, and other designers of the Memphis collective, founded by Ettore Sottsass in the early 80s.
Through a humorous and image-rich exposition, Shire will attempt to answer those life questions that we all find perplexing, such as: Where do we come from? Why we are here?
