Boundless - Senza Confini
Design Beyond Boundaries
At Milan Design Week, BTicino and Domus Academy presented the works designed during the workshop “Boundless – Senza confini”, which was based on the creation of scenarios and visions where technology could generate new relations for a broad audience with different needs.
The workshop was launched in January 2009: for about one month, 39 students from 15 different countries – divided in eight teams and coordinated by project leaders Marcello Lago and Lapo Lani – translated the concept of the workshop into their designs.
The idea of boundaries as physical limits – like the ones in our cities and homes – as well as cultural, anthropological and social limits, represents the subject of the workshop, with the aim of going beyond certain boundaries and answering different needs and abilities though design. There are two tools to reach this goal: design, as the driving force that can turn any limit into an opportunity, and technology, as a non-invasive but supporting model to the human activity.
Moreover, two courses were suggested to the students: in New utility boundary, one could imagine new utility and service scenarios to apply automation systems, while Easy and useful design was dedicated to the new frontiers of automation systems for a use that is simple and accessible to everybody.
At the end of the workshop, among the students’ works a Jury selected the three projects that better express the concept of “Design Beyond Boundaries” .
The jury included BTicino and Domus Academy representatives, as well as designers, sociologists and business personalities who were familiar with the subject of the workshop.
Some of them also offered their expertise and know-how with specific advanced lectures during the workshop.

By sponsoring the workshop “Boundless – Senza confini”, BTicino aims to promote a research activity towards new technological solutions that can break barriers, in favour of an increasingly wide margin of requirements that consider the Design for All – an approach that has increasingly concerned the company.
Therefore, the collaboration with Domus Academy guaranteed a boundless approach, with the innovative visions of international students coming from different geographical areas, as well as an opportunity cultural and business considerations.
