Metaphysical Club First Session of Lectures

 

Domus Academy organizes three days of meetings and lectures with the Metaphysical Club Members.

Inspired by “The Age of Earthquakes”, book written by Douglas Coupland, Hans-Ulrich Obrist, and Shumon Basar, Domus Academy Metaphysical Club first gathering will be focused on themes and urgent questions that our intricate and wild time never stops asking, often in languages we have to learn every day from scratch.

A bridge between the environmental crisis and the mental crisis (opportunity) generated by the Digital Revolution, Education in the Extreme Present is an homage to a wonderful cross-disciplinary reading experience, as well as an attempt to ground a collaborative effort of production of knowledge between DA students and some of the most daring minds of our age – the age of earthquakes.

Students will be involved in one-to-one sessions with the Metaphysical Club Members. They will have the possibility to expose their projects and talk with the Members.

Friday, April 10th

The whole day will be animated by lectures held by three Members of the Metaphysical Club, fostering their own personal visions about cutting-edge design and cultural themes.

h. 10 AM
Time to Make a Book”, lecture by Patricia Urquiola, an extraordinary and internationally successful designer and architect, collaborating with the most important italian and international design firms;

h. 3 PM
Concept of Design and Environment”, lecture by Su Dan, Vice Dean of the Tsinghua University Academy of Arts & Design in Beijing, and the current Design Director of the China Pavilion at Milano Expo 2015;

h. 5 PM
Architecture for Life on the Electromagnetic Spectrum”, lecture by Joseph Grima, curator and researcher, former chief editor of Domus magazine, who will co-direct the 2015 Chicago Architecture Biennial.

Saturday, April 11th

Dedicated to the first collective gathering of the Metaphysical Club Members together with Domus Academy students and faculty: as a “saloon-style teaching factory”, students will be the protagonists of one-to-one sessions with the Members of the Metaphysical Club, discussing contemporary themes and exchanging new inspirational perspectives.

Hans Ulrich Obrist interviewing Bruce Sterling”, by Hans Ulrich Obrist, curator and director at the Serpentine Gallery in London and a global reference in contemporary art and culture;

h. 2.30 PM
Talking Tables” – interactive conversations among Domus Academy Metaphysical Club Members, Tomorrows’ Club Members, Domus Academy students and faculty

h. 5 PM
Open discussion among Domus Academy Metaphysical Club Members and conclusions

h. 7 PM
Reinventing Fashion Magazines and Beyond: from Digital Limited Edition to the Post-Symbolic Interview”, lecture by Jefferson Hack, founder of Dazed & Confused, AnOther Magazine, Nowness.com and a central figure in the formulation of the most sophisticated ways of representing fashion over the past twenty years.

Monday, April 13th

The first session of the Metaphysical Club will be closed by a highly inspiring talk by one of its Members.

Building ROBOCHOP”, lecture by Clemens Weisshaar, who over the recent years he has created some of the most technologically refined design and communication projects together with Reed Kram, collaborating with Audi and institutes as the Fondazione Prada.

The event is reserved to Domus Academy students.
