Peter Shire: the Memphis Group and Beyond!!!
On Tuesday, October 9th, Domus Academy will host the ceramist and designer Peter Shire, one of the leading exponents of the Memphis group. Born in Los Angeles where he currently lives and works.,he has created ceramics, furniture, toys, interior designs, and public sculptures, that seem to at once reference and parody influences such as Bauhaus, Futurism, Art Nouveau and Art Deco. This subversive humor and playfulness extend throughout his work and made him a natural fit for the controversial and iconic Milan-based Memphis design group, of which he was a founding member.
During the lecture “The Memphis Group and Beyond!!!” Peter Shire, together with the journalist Caterina Lunghi and the Domus Academy Head of Design Cluster Emmanuel Calderon, will take a look at the history and progression of his work. He will talk about his creative methods, his family and childhood. He will also speak about his artistic career, and in particular the years he worked with Alessandro Mendini, Andrea Branzi, Michael Graves, Hans Hollein, and others designers involved in the Memphis collective founded by Ettore Sottsass in the early 80s.
Through a humorous and image-rich exposition, Shire will attempt to answer those persistent life questions that we all find perplexing, such as: where do we come from? why we are here? Where do we come from? …
