Intro

Digital tools are now part of our lives: systems helping us organize our time and devices to keep us always up-to-date are just some of the products available for professional and domestic use. This is what the market dictates today to sell an item.

It is increasingly important to sell an experience and the meeting between the user and design can and must start even before there is any interaction between the two parties. Simple items become ‘smart’; Customers are not simply users and the digital world increasingly integrates real life. So how is it possible to create a relationship between product, interaction and user? How can we connect the real and the digital world? How can we ensure that an item communicates? Understand the potential of the new technologies and know how to apply them are key factors in the design of new products for companies and designers.

This course uses the approach of learning-by-designing through an active-explorative pathway where theory and practice alternate. The purpose is to offer companies fundamentals and advanced input.

Course Leadership

Opendot in collaboration with Domus Academy.

Opendot is a FabLab and a hub of research and open innovation. It is a spin-off from the company Dotdotdot – a Milanese studio of exhibition and interaction design.
Opendot was founded to create a facility for rapid prototyping, research and experimentation in the area of technological innovation.

Objectives

The key objective of the course is update, develop and learn theory as well as the use of innovative applications in the field of interaction design. They will guide the participants to the target projects and to new spheres of intervention for the production of avant-garde solutions. These can generate original ideas to create something of value for the companies.

Method and Contents 

Day 1 

Module 1 / Spatial contact.

Background and theory: digital space, touch and gestures, physical/digital output.
Demonstration: Kinect, screens and projections.

Day 2 

Module 2 / Smart objects.

Background and theory: Internet of Things, a description of interconnected technological systems.
Demonstration: Arduino.

Module 3 / The user and his screen.

Background and theory: App/web-app, user as creator, parametric design/dataviz, the world of open source.
Demonstration: basic html, building app mock-ups (i.e. invasion).

Day 3 (optional) 

Designing together – from idea to design.

The third day will be dedicated to the development of a real project starting from the company know-how and specific projects. An experimental application is offered and selected according to the research, development and innovation needs of the participants to learn how to design using technology in a group.

Audience

These programs have been conceived for companies, associations, agencies, consulting companies from a variety of sectors.

They aim at exploring a number of experimental processes and broaden the participants’ horizons through innovative methods and the integration of different disciplines.
