Architect and town planner. He has developed several projects in Italy and abroad, receiving prestigious awards including the recent award ‘International Highrise Award 2014’ for the project Vertical Forest, the Green Building Italy prize for the project Siemens Headquarters in Milan in 2010 and he won the ideas competition ‘Liquid Landscapes’ for the design of the Emilian stretch of the river Po in 2008.
He is one of the founding members of Gruppo A12, with whom he organizes and conducts seminars, research projects, exhibitions and installations on contemporary urban conditions, and particularly on the relationships between urban context and public art. With Gruppo A12 he has realized and exhibited works in numerous exhibitions and biennials including: Venice Bienniale of Architecture (2000, 2004 and 2008), Contemporary Art Bienniale in Ljublijana (2000), Museum PS1 in New York (2001), CCA of Kitakyushu in Japan (2002), Shanghai Art Bienniale (2002), Kroller-Muller Museum in Otterlo, Netherlands (2004), Istanbul Art Bienniale (2005), Busan Biennale in South Korea (2006), Enel Contemporanea in Venice (2008), Barbican Gallery in London (2009), Pinksummer in Genoa (2013), Triennale of Milan (2014).
He teaches at several Italian and international universities and institutes including: since 2004 the Domus Academy, since 2009 the Faculty of Civil Engineering-Architecture of Genoa. He has been a visiting professor at Italian and international institutions and research centers including the KSU – Kent State University of Florence, the CSU California State University of Florence, the SUF – Syracuse University of Florence and the i2a – International Institute of Architecture of Vico Morcote. He has given lectures and seminars at important foreign universities and research institutes such as: PS1 of New York, Kroller Muller of Otterlo, Polytechnic of Haifa, Faculty of Architecture of Tel Aviv, HKDC of Hong Kong, Polytechnic of Milan, Ming Chuan University, National Taipei University, Ching Yuan Christian University and Fujen Catholic University of Taipei, Bilgy University, Beykent University, Gedik University, ITU Istanbul Technical University, Cadir Has University e Turkish Kadir Has University of Istanbul.
The projects and research that he has made are published in numerous national and international magazines and websites of architecture and design. He has published articles on The Plan, Corriere della Sera, Elementi. In 2012 he has published ‘Barreca & La Varra. Questioni di Facciata – A Matter of Façade’, by Skira. He is editor of several publications that collect works and research carried out with Domus Academy, such as: ‘Canton Ticino: territory of a new modernity ‘(currently in its third edition). In 2014 he has published ‘New Water Anthropology’, by ListLab, a collection of studies and research on the relationship between architecture and water, always of particular importance and interest in its research and design.
